How efficient are CHPs? 

When exploring the subject of CHP efficiency, the most important point to consider is the fact that CHPs – Combined Heat & Power systems – utilise the heat produced as a byproduct of the electricity generation process, they are considered to be an extremely energy efficient source of heat & power.

Each individual CHP engine’s efficiency depends on a number of key elements, such as the technology used, the overall age of the engine, and the fuel used – such as biogas, LPG or natural gas – and therefore an absolute number that describes the efficiency of all CHP engines can’t be given. However, simply by using the heat they produce, CHP engines have an average efficiency of 80%, where some are able to achieve an impressive 90%! 

What’s more, CHP engines typically make their owners an energy cost saving of up to 20%, and help to reduce carbon emissions up to 30%.
