Civil engineering vs. construction engineering

Successful construction projects – i.e. those that run to time, to budget and are completed to expectations – require the hard work, dedication and coordination of a team of skilled and knowledgeable professionals; professionals such as construction engineers and/or civil engineers. But, what’s the difference between civil engineering and construction engineering?

The difference between civil engineering and construction engineering

A construction engineer is actually a type of civil engineer. A construction engineer, however, is entrusted with the task of construction oversight, meaning they’re heavily involved in many aspects of the construction process – whether that be buildings, plants or roads.

And, although civil engineering and construction engineering do cross over significantly, there are some differences between the two, alongside construction engineers overseeing projects.

Whilst construction engineers will play a part in this process, their responsibilities focus on on-site management, putting them firming on the construction site and involved, hands on.

Construction engineers, however, primarily focus on the execution of the project and therefore take a broader approach to working; construction engineers typically receive training in techniques, methods, costs, scheduling, and staff management with their top priority being to complete a job to client expectations – to a specific timeline, budget and quality.
